About New Vyshyvanka

New Vyshyvanka is an independent, woman-owned clothing brand founded in August 2022, creating modern apparel and accessories inspired by traditional Ukrainian embroidery—reimagined as subtle acts of resistance.

Drawing from centuries-old embroidery traditions, New Vyshyvanka transforms historic patterns into contemporary designs that communicate identity, solidarity, and dissent. Some messages are immediately visible. Others are intentionally hidden within the pattern, designed to be recognized only by those who know how to read them.

This is protest, stitched quietly.

Ukrainian Embroidery, Reimagined

In Ukrainian culture, embroidery has long functioned as more than decoration. Historically, patterns conveyed protection, belonging, belief, and resistance—often coded, often personal, and often political.

New Vyshyvanka builds on this visual language through a contemporary design process that blends historic motifs with modern typography and graphic structure. Each piece begins with research into traditional Ukrainian embroidery patterns and evolves into an original design that bridges heritage and the present.

The result is modern Ukrainian embroidery apparel that feels timeless at first glance—and unmistakably current once you look closer.

Where the Research Comes From

Every design at New Vyshyvanka starts with study. The patterns and alphabet that inform the work draw from contemporary Ukrainian embroidery scholarship, including Volodymyr Pidhirnyak's Текстова вишивка. Бродівське письмо on Brody-style textual embroidery, regional pattern collections from across Ukraine, and the broader vyshyvanka tradition documented in Ukrainian cultural archives.

I take that visual language and rebuild it. Letters get rotated, mirrored, and arranged into geometric compositions. City names get woven into patterns inspired by that region's specific embroidery history. The result is original work that carries the structure and symbolism of the tradition without copying it.

This isn't an exercise in nostalgia. It's a continuation of a living visual culture, rebuilt for the way people dress today.

Design as Subtle Resistance

New Vyshyvanka believes powerful messages do not need to be loud.

Our apparel and accessories are designed for people who value nuance, symbolism, and intentional design. Hidden typography and coded patterns are central to the work, reflecting how resistance has historically existed under pressure: quietly, intelligently, and with purpose.

The brand stands against oppression, authoritarianism, and systems that harm marginalized communities, and supports human rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom of expression. These values inform every design and production decision.

The Brand Behind the Work

My name is Tetyana, and I'm the designer behind New Vyshyvanka. I was born in Odesa and now run this business from Vancouver, Washington, with a professional background in graphic design, advertising, and digital marketing.

What started as my response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has grown into a purpose-driven apparel brand rooted in cultural heritage, professional design practice, and thoughtful execution. Every pattern, every product, every word on this site comes through me. New Vyshyvanka is small by design. It lets me make decisions based on values, not volume.

Craft, Quality & Production

Every design starts on my screen and goes through multiple production refinements before launch. I work with embroidery and print partners I've personally vetted, on garments selected for fabric weight, durability, and feel rather than the lowest-cost option.

Everything is produced on demand, which means slightly longer fulfillment times of 7 to 14 days. It also means no overproduction, no warehouse full of unsold inventory, and no waste. When you order, the piece is made for you specifically. That's not a marketing line. That's how the operation actually works.

Why “New Vyshyvanka”
