Odesa Embroidered Patch

I was born in Odesa. And one of my clearest childhood memories is the grape vines that climbed up to the second floor of our flat — thick enough to shade the whole balcony from the summer sun, heavy with fruit you could pick and eat right there without going anywhere. That's Odesa to me. That specific warmth. That particular abundance.

Odesa's region is the largest wine-growing area in Ukraine, and grapes show up in the embroidery tradition there for exactly that reason — they're everywhere, in the courtyards, on the balconies, woven into the visual life of the city. So when it came time to design this patch, there was really only one choice.

This is my graphic interpretation of that imagery — not a reproduction of a historical embroidery, but something personal. A pattern that makes me think of home every time I look at it.
